If it’s a secured nut with a cotter-pin, it can’t tighten or loosen on it’s own. The only way it’ll get looser is through bearing give or damage. If they didn’t tighten the castle nut (the nut the cotter-pin goes through) to the proper rolling torque spec, then YES, it could EASILY take out the wheel bearing, not to mention destroy the spindle on that side, the caliper, break pads, etc. Good luck with it!
either too loose or too tight can wreck the bearing. take it back to the shop where the work was done and have them fix it right.
when the axle nut is torqued it sets the preload on the wheel bearing. if the axle nut is not torqued properly, its possible for this sealed bearing to ride improperly and wear faster than normal. all this being said, fwd wheel bearings go bad from hitting speed bumps to fast, bad potholes, and just normal wear and tear.
