The model that you have chosen is one of the most reliable models of BMW. And it is not over-engineered like the newer models (which have all sorts of control modules, sensors, actuators and software programs that can go bad).
But yes, it can be slightly costlier than Asian cars for several reasons: a) the deutchsmark is costlier than the japanese yen, thus the parts costs more.
    b) bmw uses cutting-edge technology which naturally costs more and has more chances of going bad (in contrast to asian cars which mostly uses hand-me-down technology that are naturally more reliable).
And no, it is not costlier when compared to top of the line european cars.
But ultimately, a BMW costs more to buy, maintain and repair than an “ordinary” car. How much more costly depends on your choice of model, your kind of driving and where you use it, and your maintenance efforts.
A BMW is not for everybody. But a lot of people love it.

In my opinion yes. I used to have a company owned BMW and the amount of repairs it took, I used to say that if the company gives me this car free of charge I will refuse. BMW insists that the repair charges should be almost 50% of your mileage i.e if you drive 100,000 miles should should be spending something like 50,000 $ in repairs. The problems with BMW starts at one end and go in circles i.e from left to right then back left to right and then the middle portion.I could be wrong but I used to work for a BMW dealership some time ago.

I have had an ’02 530 for 2.5 years, a ’99 M3 for 2 years and a ’95 325 for 1.5 years. I say no. Keep in mind that they will need regular maintenance. I also had a ’00 323 for 3 years, leased in ’02, it ran trouble free. The 530 has been very inexpensive to own, even its last 2 maintenance calls have been only oil changes and that has been in the last 16 months!
I would recommend the 325 highly. You’ll love it.

The repairs are costs are pretty high at the stealerships. Find a highly recommended independent. I just had a LSD put in my 325 for less than $300. Was quoted almost $1000 at the stealership.

With a 3 Series, you shouldn’t have too much trouble. Those are actually pretty reliable. It’s the cars like the 540, 745, and “M” vehicles you would have to worry about, because they have a lot of electronics and bigger, more complex engines. Not to say those cars are unreliable, but maintenance isn’t cheap. I had a 740i that I recently traded in and that car cost me quite a bit for repairs when it did break. The 325 shouldn’t be too bad. Just take good care of it and make sure it doesn’t have any problems when you buy it. The only thing that would concern me would be if it had high miles for it’s production year. Be sure to do routine maintenance checks by a BMW dealer or that car will turn into a money pit! The costs for maintenance if properly cared for shouldn’t be any more than other European or Japanese cars, and that car could last you well over 250K miles.

Higher repair rates than Japanese cars. But the lowest repair rate of German cars. Audi is catching up fast though.

BMWs have a low repair rate. Check out their JD Power Dependability (3 year) rate:http://www.jdpower.com/corporate/news/re

If you bring it to a dealer every time, yes. When something goes on my bmw, I find the part online, then bring it to the dealer for fixing. The last two repairs I saved over $1000 by buying my own parts off ebay, brand new with warranties…
