Probably the alternator, take it to a shop and have a charging system buttysis done or if you trust the pros at autozone, they do this for free.

  2. Win S says:

Voltage regulator is not limiting the alternator output. You’ll cook your battery quickly if you don’t fix it.

    You should be so lucky.
Most people can barely get 14 volts out of their alternator. It’s not going to hurt anything by being at 18 volts. In fact it will charge your batter even if the lights and the A/C is running. Which is what you want.
Has something recently stopped working on the truck? It could be a bad Gauge or voltage regulator.
But more than likely it’s been doing this for some time and you just now noticed. I wouldn’t worry about anything.
Hahahaha burn up your electrical system? Are you serious?
Have any of you actually worked on cars before?
My 1985 Toyota 4Runner came from the factory with 16 volts and with no lights on would run between 16-17 volts with no problem whatsoever.
As you turned on headlights, windshield wipers, radio, etc. It would go down to 12-13 volts.
I have never in my entire life seen or heard of a cars electrical system getting burned up from 18 volts. But hey one quick way to find out is to head down to the local auto parts store and have them check it.

chances are with a truck that new the regulator is built into the alternator so either you need to replace the regulator if external or the alternator if the regulator is internal

voltage regulator is your problem output diod is bad causeing overchsrge ,this could cause your batt.to EXPLODE ! regulator may be seperate from alt.check with parts store to be sure

  6. jumbobre says:

Don’t listen to monkyboy!!!!! 18 volts is WAY too much your system is only able to handle up to 14.5 volts. Anything else will burn up your battery and electrical system.
