What is the relationship between the percent ionic character of single bonds and the electronegativity difference of their elements?

One Response to “What is the relationship between the percent ionic character of single bonds and the electronegativity differe?”

  1. Marko says:

The greater the difference between electronegativity of two elements, the greater the percentage of ionic character in the bond that connects these elements.

For example, a bond between a Be and a Cl atom is less ionic than a bond between a Cs and Cl atom, because the difference between electronegativity is greater in the example with Cs and Cl.

Generally, if the differece between electronegativity is greager than 1.9, the ionic character prevails. If the difference is less than 1.9, the covalent character prevails.

    Hope that helped, cheers! :)
